Due to the surge in demand for Jukeboxes at this time Tonomat in Germany could not fulfil the demand for jukeboxes that Ditchburn required, so they turned to the other British Jukebox Manufacturer Bal-Ami in Essex and ordered around 200 machines for various sites around the UK.

Due to post war restrictions still in place that did not allow the importation of non essential items from the USA ( including Jukeboxes ) Geoffrey Norman Ditchburn had discussions with Tonomat in Germany, part of the post war agreement was that trade between Germany was encouraged to allow the rebuilding of the German economy and infrastructure, in exchange British industries had access to German patents and inventions to use in our own industry, and manufacturing. Tonomat produced some of the most well engineered Jukeboxes ever made, they certainly did not copy the design of the USA manufacturers and were engineered by ex-telecommunications engineers, that used many telephone exchange components in their design.
Due By 1962 the restrictions on importation of Jukeboxes from the USA had been lifted Ditchburn became the UK official distributor of Wurlitzer USA Jukeboxes, they imported 8 machines every month from the USA which continued until Ditchburn was was sold in 1972.

In 1960 the "Deutsche Wurlitzer GmbH" was founded in Germany as a subsidiary of the US Wurlitzer and in 1961 started to manufacture The Lyric Models. From 1963 Ditchburn decided to import these from Germany as well as the USA models to fulfil the demand and requirement of Jukeboxes throughout the UK. although the exact listings and import numbers are not known, they were the mainstay of demand and were imported in larger numbers than the American Wurlitzer models. at least 8 per month of each machine, approximately over 1000 machines were brought and distributed into the UK.

In 1972 Ditchburn bought a Wurlitzer Carousel C100 cassette Jukebox it had a Capacity of 10 cassettes and was to be Distributed in UK by Ditchburn as "Cassettina" This was not as successful as the press cutting below made out as I think we had one of the C100 and in 1973 we bought a C110 these were evaluated by Ditchburn / Gainesmead chief engineer Alan Black, and the reason they were not used was Gainesmead took over Ditchburn and Wurlitzer imports stopped in 1973.
From 1962 onwards Ditchburn also brought Seeburg Jukeboxes into the UK, various models were imported from the USA although exact numbers are not known, Arthur estimates there were about 160 Seeburg machines imported . Ditchburn also imported over 50 Seeburg BMS 1000 machines, these were Background Music Systems that were operated along with the Symphonette BGM systems providing music for shops and companies throughout the UK.

When Ditchburn Equipment was sold in 1972 to Gainesmead 2,832 Automatic Phonographs were transferred as assets to Gainesmead limited. But I do not think there was any Bal Ami’s left in service, I think these had been removed from service by that time. Arthur Phillips ( Ditchburn Chief Audio Engineer )
